Tour merch has become a quality crisis because it's optimized for speed and volume, not for the people who actually wear it. Most vendors are working backward from a tour schedule and a venue contract — they need five thousand units printed and shipped in two weeks, so they source whatever poly-cotton blend prints fastest and costs least. The fabric doesn't matter. The construction doesn't matter. What matters is getting product to the table before the doors open. You're buying a souvenir that was never built to survive past the drive home.
The base fabric is usually 180–240GSM: thin enough to feel like an undershirt the second you put it on. No structure. No weight. The kind of cotton that pills after one dryer cycle because the fibers are short and the knit is loose. Most brands don't publish garment weight because if they did, you'd see how flimsy it actually is. Screen prints crack because they're applied to fabric that can't hold tension. Seams split because they're sewn for speed, not stress. The whole garment is designed to move units, not last seasons.
Heavyweight tour pieces do exist, but they're rare, because most merch pipelines aren't set up to handle real garment-grade construction. PØM's approach is the opposite: we start with 440GSM and 500GSM cotton — fabric dense enough to hold its shape and heavy enough that you feel it the second you pick it up — then treat graphics as a detail, not a cover for weak material. Industrial Tier starts at 440GSM. Foundry Tier is 500GSM, the heaviest cotton fleece you can work with before it stops draping like clothing. Both are built in The Lab with reinforced stitching and preshrunk fabric, because a garment this heavy has to be constructed to actually carry its own weight.
